TOFD – Time of Flight Diffraction is the most reliable Non-Destructive Testing methods. It is most commonly used in testing welds for both in-service inspection and pre-service inspection.

ULTRASONIC METHODS WIDELY USED AMONG THE FOLLOWING INDUSTRIES
Amplitude calculation of the reflected signal is a relatively unreliable approach to sizing the defects among the mechanisms. It’s because the amplitude is strong and depends on the orientation of the cracks.
TOFD uses enough time of flight of an ultrasonic pulse instead of amplitude for the size and placement of the reflector. A TOFD program is a pair of ultrasonic probes which sits on opposite sides of the welds. Among the probes, the transmitter emits an ultrasonic pulse to the receiver which is present on the other end.
Among undamaged pipes, the detected signals are from two waves at the receiver end. One which travels along the surface and other is reflected off the far wall.
When a crack is detected, there will be diffraction of the ultrasonic wave from the tips of the crack. By using the approximate and measured time of the flight of the pulse, the crack tips depth can be calculated using the basic trigonometry technology automatically.
